NPO J.POSH MOVEMENT

Japan Breast Cancer Pink-ribbon Movement

http://www.j-posh.com

The J.POSH MOVEMENT is an educational movement regarding breast cancer, sharing the same objectives as the Pink-Ribbon Movements not only in Japan but also around the world.

Statement

The reason why I was able – with the help of my close friends – to start this movement which had been lingering in my heart for a long time is that I myself am a doctor who personally has come to know breast cancer patients, and also because my only precious elder sister died of breast cancer.

There may not be many people who are in contact in daily life with breast cancer patients. Therefore, it may not be easy to imagine what kind of conditions they are in. However, if one realizes that breast cancer is now increasing and is the most common type of cancer among women, it is not a matter to be overlooked.

From the day a patient is notified of breast cancer, she suffers from feelings of profound desperation and sorrow, and has to fight continuously with worries and fear of death. Likewise the patient’s family has to endure painful and trying days.

Despite such suffering, in the field of medical treatment, although physical cures may exist, an adequate system for psychological care is unfortunately lacking.

Patients today are still left in a state of loneliness.

My sister developed cancer at the age of 46 and passed away at the age of 49. It was a short life.

She was an intelligent, kind and reliable person, and her husband and two sons were left without her.

Like other families of breast cancer patients, after I lost my sister, every member of my family including myself was overcome with feelings of sadness, emptiness and loneliness. In this way the family was also deeply hurt.

Here is what I thought:

If only my sister’s cancer and that of other patients could have been discovered through earlier examinations !

If only there were a place for medical treatment which one could rely on both physically and psychologically !

If only there were a way to give strength to children who lost their mothers to breast cancer !

In order to change these ‘ifs’ into reality, my friends and I started the Pink-ribbon Movement here in Japan. Although our powers may be limited, we will do our best. Please offer us your understanding and encouragement as these will surely become a great force. I believe that this ‘great force’ will be able to save our future generation.

I would be most grateful for your kind support.

Program

We are promoting a network with the J.POSH MOVEMENT at its center as follows

J.POSH program image

Present situation:

  • There are only 29 urban and rural prefectures that carry out mammogram examinations. (as of May 2002)
  • There are only 29 mammogram examination cars to circulate around the regions among the 41 branches of the Japan breast cancer association.

↓The J.POSH MOVEMENT aims at the following:

For all women:

  • · Diffusion of correct knowledge about breast cancer.
  • · Educational movement for the diffusion of mammogram examinations. (Organization of educational seminars, educational activities through the internet etc.)
  • · Activities to promote examinations by way of mammogram examination cars.
  • · Donation of mammogram examination equipment to self-governing communities and medical institutions.

Present situation:

In Japan there is no system to aid the training of personnel to qualify as breast cancer specialists (specialized doctors, nurses and staff).

In the West, aid activities such as those of the Mc Millan cancer foundation in England are carried out actively, resulting in the development of many breast cancer specialists that can give patients the right support.

↓ The J.POSH MOVEMENT aims at the following:

For all patients:

  • Promotion of specialized medical treatment
  • Activities for psychological care, such as counseling by specialists
  • Holistic support activities by specialists
  • Aid activities for the development of specialized doctors, nurses and staff in order to realize the above objectives
  • Aid activities for breast cancer research
  • Support for the establishment of medical institutions specialized in breast cancer

Present situation:

Many of the breast cancer patients support society and families, and are mostly women in active service.

The families of patients (especially the children) bear deep wounds in their hearts. Moreover, there are big changes in their daily lives.

However, programs are lacking to support these families both on the psychological level and on the level of daily life.

↓ The J.POSH MOVEMENT aims at the following:

  • Support for the families of breast cancer patients (nursery service, dispatch of home helpers, counseling etc.)
  • ‘Family history clinic’ service for those women with a history of breast cancer in the family
  • Aid activities for children whose mothers have died of breast cancer
  • Organization of a network among families of patients
  • Establishment and aid of support centers for families of patients

Symbol mark

The Pink-ribbon is the symbol mark of the J.POSH Movement

The Pink-ribbon is the symbol mark of an educational movement regarding breast cancer started by a family in America which lost a member to breast cancer and made ribbons with the prayer that ‘such tragedies may not be repeated’. It is a symbol of understanding and support regarding breast cancer.

The J.POSH Movement also uses a Pink-ribbon design as a motif to symbolize understanding and support towards this movement.

J.POSH fund

Establishment of the J.POSH Foud

For the prevention and early detection of breast cancer, and for receiving diagnosises and treatment by specialists, it is important for many people to have the right knowledge.

Donations by both individuals and corporations are welcome.

Donations may be of any amount.

We appreciate everyone’s feelings of support and collaboration expressed through such donations.

J.POSH Love support Movement

The Love Support Movement is a system of donation to the J.POSH Movement in which one can easily participate by buying goods aimed at the prevention of breast cancer through education.

Through the J.POSH Love Support Movement, goods such as pinbadges, handtowels and T-shirts are sold.

The proceeds go to the J.POSH Fund and provide important funding for the carrying out of the various programs.
